- Oxygenated distilled water: Some bacteria are anaerobic, and cannot tolerate gaseous oxygen, such as those bacteria which live in deep underwater sediments, or those which cause bacterial food poisoning. The bacteria that causes acne is propionibacterium and it is anaerobic. It doesn’t like oxygen one bit and, hurrah for acne sufferers, it can die in its presence. Oxygen kills the bacteria by compromising the cell’s membrane, letting vital compounds leak out. It also reduces the swelling and inflammation that are characteristic of acne. Oxygen jump-starts the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, fighting the effects of aging, and stimulates new blood vessel production. It also cripples the bacteria’s ability to reproduce.
- Salicylic acid: used for treating breakouts due to its antimicrobial properties. Salicylic acid (a BHA) has the ability to penetrate into the pore (AHAs do not), and thus can exfoliate inside the pore as well as on the surface of the skin, which makes it effective for reducing blemishes, including blackheads and whiteheads.
